The University of Northampton (UON) is one of the youngest universities in the UK, but is one of the few universities to be ranked Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). They have won multiple awards for their work in the area of social impact, being the first university in the UK to be named as Changemaker Campus in 2012.
THE PROCESS
Challenge
Designing logos for various events and initiatives at the University of Northampton, like the Experience Day, the Northampton Employment Promise, and the Northampton People Awards, comes with the challenge of striking a balance between excitement, engagement, and brand consistency. Each of these initiatives serves a distinct purpose, targeting different audiences, so the logos must reflect the specific energy and meaning behind each event.
Solution
EXPERIENCE DAY
The Experience Day logo needed to embody the excitement and anticipation of starting a university journey. It was essential that the design captured the dynamic energy of campus life – reflecting not only the vibrancy and enthusiasm of new beginnings but also the promise of discovery and growth.
The logo had to evoke a sense of belonging, guiding applicants toward the transition into university life with confidence and eagerness. This required a balance between youthful energy and some kind of gravitas, ensuring that applicants felt both welcomed and inspired.
EMPLOYMENT PROMISE
The Northampton Employment Promise logo, in contrast, was focused on conveying opportunity and support. It needed to reflect the University’s commitment and pledge. The design had to project a sense of seriousness and trust. This forward-looking vision was central to creating a logo that instilled confidence, ambition, and the sense that students are fully backed by the institution in their professional development. It also had to highlight the fact that UON launched this initiative in 2018, long before all other competitors.
PEOPLE AWARDS
The Northampton People Awards logo, on the other hand, needed to celebrate achievements and embody a sense of pride and recognition. It was crucial that the logo honored the exceptional contributions and accomplishments of students, staff, and alumni. The design had to feel prestigious yet accessible, conveying celebration, respect, and admiration. It needed to shine with an elegance that reflected the University’s values while making those honored feel truly special, creating a visual representation of the excellence and dedication being recognized.
My Role
My role involved translating the unique essence of each event into a memorable logo, while adhering to the University’s brand colors and style guidelines. I did my best tomake each design resonate with its target audience, embodying the spirit of the event it represented.
The Final Product
Each logo offers a unique visual identity that feels fresh yet aligned with the overall brand, ensuring students and staff could easily recognize and connect with these key experiences in their journey.
